I must remind you that after the Ten Commandments there were certain judgments that God gave, and that’s been the thing that Jeremiah’s been referring to. It has to do with the way you treat your neighbor. It has to do with the way that you conduct your business. It’s what kind of social life are you living today. Jeremiah makes it clear, my friend, you’ve gone down the detour. You’re away from God. And all of this business of talking about how fundamental you are. You can talk about doctrine and, believe me, I insist on that. I’d really like to know what kind of a life you’re living. How honest are you? How clean are you in your living? That’s what he’s talking about here. This gets right down where we’re living today.

“He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion.” In other words, those stars are up there in the places they’re in because God put them there. And that’s where He wanted them, and He didn’t put them where I want them. He put them where He wanted them. And this is His universe, and He’s the One to be worshipped. And we call ourselves civilized today, and we find ourselves giving ourselves to that which does not help at all—a little Zodiac. Can you imagine intelligent people dealing with that kind of thing in this matter of fortune telling and all of that. Why not worship the living and the true God?

He is the head of the church

Anything that you do in the local church, you’re to do it not only in the name of Christ, but you’re to do it at His command. He’s the Lord. And He made the statement, He said, “You called me Lord, Lord, and you don’t do the things that I say—you don’t obey Me.” I wonder if He might not say that to many of us today. We just don’t call Him Lord. He says many in that day are going to say, “Lord, Lord, didn’t we do this, that, and the other thing? We were busy as termites for You.” And He’s going to say, “Well, I don’t even know you. I didn’t know you were doing that in My name. You certainly didn’t go about it that way. You didn’t seek My will. You didn’t seek to obey Me.” Oh this is very personal, you see.

Our greatest need

We forgot that any nation or any church or any individual fall from the inside. It’s not what happens on the outside, but it’s what happens on the inside. And you can’t glory today in riches, and you can’t glory today in power, and you can’t glory today in wisdom. And we have had a brain trust in Washington now too long. We need somebody up there who knows something other than the present godless philosophy. We need somebody who knows God and is willing to stand on his two feet and says that he knows God. That’s the great need in this country today—is a return to God.

Come empty handed

Now you see, these three words—love and mercy and grace—are a little trinity. Love is that in God which existed before He would care to exercise mercy or grace. God was Love. That’s His nature; it’s His attribute. Now, mercy is that in God which provided for the need of sinful man. And grace is that also in Him which acts freely to save because all the demands of holiness has been satisfied. So that, God, because He’s merciful, you can come to Him and, by His grace, He’ll save you. You don’t have to bring anything.

Rich in mercy

Mercy is a word that was used back in the Old Testament, and it actually was equivalent to the word “grace”—because it was the mercy seat back there, and it was the sacrifice that made the throne of God. And when you and I come to God, we don’t want justice. What we want is mercy. And we need mercy from God. Now, mercy is what God has provided for all of His creatures. God’s got all the mercy that you need. God is rich in mercy, we’re told. He has plenty of it.

Obey Him

“But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well with you.” In other words, He says, “I want you to obey Me.” This business of coming into the temple, it’s great. It’s wonderful. But when your lives contradict it. And someone has said that some people go to church to eye the clothes and others to close their eyes, not really to worship God. Their lives have not been changed. It’s not the testimony you give in church; it’s the testimony you give out yonder in the world that counts, friends. Oh my, this is personal, is it not?

Sons of God

Now, no individual Israelite ever called God “Father.” He was a father to the nation, and He called Israel “My Son,” but He never called David His son. He says, “David my servant.” He never called Moses His son. He called him, “Moses my servant.” It’s only in this day of grace. How wonderful it is. How privileged we are today. “To as many as received him”—that is, the Lord Jesus—“to them (those that received Christ) the right (the “exousia” power) to become the sons of God” to those that don’t do any more nor less than just simply trust in His name. Oh, is He your Savior today from sin? If He is, you’re not only a saved sinner, you’re a son of God.

Saved from what?

My friend, today you say you’re a Christian. What do you mean by that? “Oh, I’ve trusted Christ.” Trusted Him for what? “I trusted Him as my Savior. He’s done so much for me.” Fine, I’m glad to hear that. But did He save you from sin? Remember He died on the cross to save you from sin; not to give you a new personality or make you a millionaire. He died to save you from sin. “He was delivered for our offenses.” And we were very offensive to God, by the way. Are you saved, friend? That’s important today.

Only faith brings salvation

This idea today that you are in and of yourself able to please God, my friend, is absolutely contradicted in the Word of God. It’s impossible to please Him; you can’t meet His standard. Therefore, good works cannot produce salvation, but salvation can produce good works. And Paul makes it very clear how we’re saved in Ephesians 2:8-10. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
